Overview
College of General and Vocational Education, Saguenay refers to the historical regional Cégep du Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean. Quebec’s CEGEP system began in 1967; in 1969-70 the Ministry of Education launched a regionalization process for the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean CEGEPs, and in 1972 the four institutions of the region (including Cégep de Chicoutimi and Cégep de Jonquière) were formally grouped under a single regional administrative structure. Full autonomy was restored to the four individual CEGEPs in 1980, ending the regional entity.
Today the city of Saguenay is served by two independent CEGEPs, Cégep de Chicoutimi and Cégep de Jonquière, each with its own history predating and following the 1972-1980 regional period.
