Description of University of Bath

History The University of Bath received its Royal Charter in 1966. It was ranked 5th in the UK in the 2016 Guardian University Guide and 12th in the 2014/15 QS top 50 under 50 universities. The University’s Chancellor is His Royal Highness, the Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex. Location and transport The University Campus is 1 mile from the centre of the beautiful, and historic, City of Bath, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The campus buildings are set in landscaped grounds, alongside a wide range of convenient on-site leisure, social and commercial facilities – creating a friendly community feel. The University of Bath was named ‘Best Campus University in Britain’ in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2014. A frequent bus service runs from campus to the city, from where there are regular transport links to London and Bristol. Entry standards The University of Bath seeks the most academically able students from an international recruitment pool. Student mix Our gender mix comprises 54% male students and 46% female students. Course flexibility Most courses are offered with an option of a paid placement year or a period of study abroad. Our research ethos has a strong focus upon impact, tackling issues of global significance – from developing new drugs to cure breast cancer to working with Ford to develop fuel efficient cars. The Research Excellence Framework 2014 graded 87% of University research as world-leading or internationally excellent. Students’ Union The Students’ Union has a Gold Student Union Evaluation Initiative (SUEI) award for being one of the best developed and well-managed students’ unions in the UK. It is consistently ranked in the top 10 in the National Student Survey. The Student Centre provides a buzzing social hub for student life on campus. The Students’ Union supports a vibrant social/recreational programme and its interactive website receives over 6 million hits per month. There are over 100 societies/clubs addressing cultural, sports and arts interests. The union also offers welfare services and personal development opportunities. The Students’ Union recently won the NUS Officer Team of 2014/15 and the NUS/UKCISA Internationalised Students’ Union of the Year Award 2015. Sport The Sports Training Village has a range of world class facilities, including a 50m swimming pool (a London 2012 Olympics legacy pool), tennis and squash courts, athletics tracks, astroturf pitches, and a judo dojo. A number of sports have their national or other high performance bases at Bath including modern pentathlon, bob skeleton, and netball. It is also one of British swimming’s five intensive training centres. Olympic and Paralympic athletes train at Bath including the Sochi 2014 Skeleton gold medallist, Lizzy Yarnold.
