Benemerita Universidad Autonoma de Puebla is a public higher education institution located in the City of Puebla, capital of the State of Puebla in México. The origins of the university go back to 1578 when the Jesuits initiated their educational activities in Puebla. The College of the Holy Spirit (El Colegio del Espíritu Santo), the predecessor of BUAP, was founded in 1587. In 1790 the name of the college changed to Colegio Carolino, in honour of King Charles VI of Spain, this name remained until 1805. Between 1805 and 1824, changed their name several times in that period following the political trend, but always mainted their adhesion to Catholic doctrine. In 1825, the name of the institution was changed to El Colegio del Estado and became a secular institution. Finally, in 1937 the college was transformed into Universidad de Puebla. In 1956, the University was granted its autonomy and changed its name to Universidad Autónoma de Puebla. In 1987, in consideration of the educational work of the university, the State Congress of Puebla granted the title Benémerita, which was incorporated in its official name in 1992.
